Tata NEXON- at last a TATA stunner

Tata NEXON- At last ……….. a Tata car People would love to own. Tata motors has been struggling in PV segment of Indian auto industry of late. They tried different things to regain the market share. But nothings seemed to be working for them from dirt cheap NANO to pricey ARIA. Everything just gone into the river. Why was that happening it’s a discussion for some other day.Recently they seems to have found their forward gear back with TIAGO,TIGOR AND HEXA  with their horizon next strategy i.e. undercut rivals in price and run down them in features.

In 2014, Tata unveiled as a concept NEXON comes as the 4th product under this design philosophy, reflecting a dynamic and sporty design. Boasting a sculpted body that portrays a sense of power. And agility, the NEXON flaunts an appealing exterior design with a dual tone exterior color scheme. Nexon will be competeting in high growth and congested market of compact psedu suv/crossover. And if we define segement in terms of price then 6-10 lac bracket. This makes the segment even more congested with premium hatchbacks like baleno and elite i20 and top end of micro suv cum premium hatch IGNIS also in the segment. So it will depend lot on the pricing. That discussion for another day. Lets first discuss the design and style quotient.


There are two parts involved here exterior and interior. As far as looks are concerned it is very distinct and will make you make you stand apart in the crowd. Looks and overall size are more in line with hot hatch then a suv but it has 209mm ground clearence. So if u r looking for suv feel then go for Brezaa or TUV 300.The interiors are concerned they are very un TATA. And are up to the competition for a segment higher.


As far as exteriors are concern the design with a raised stance makes the NEXON look sleek and proportionate . Aerodynamic silhouette with raked rear enhances the sporty character. The front fascia of the NEXON appears athletic with the chrome Humanity Line seamlessly integrated into the stylish projector headlamps with feline-eye shaped Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). NEXON displays a first of its kind amalgamation of art with the automobile design featuring Ivory White accents around fog lamps, swooshing across the shoulder line merging on to X-factor at the back with sonic Silver dual tone roof, to lend NEXON a signature appearance.

With various features like, best-in-class ground clearance of 209 mm, 16” machine-cut alloy wheels, a dual path suspension for superior ride comfort. It comes with lowest turning circle radius with EPAS (Electric Power assisted steering).  On paper it has all the tools to be great car and potential to lead TATA’s into people’s hearts and homes again.



Interiors are one thing that Tata motors has always been struggling since Indica days.  They have been trying to improve that since vista but somehow fall short on matrial quality and fit and finish. Finally with the Nexon, Tata has managed to improve some of the these shortcomings like fit and finish and choice of material is best from Tata yet.

But they seems to have overdone when tried to stuffed with lots of feature some of found on luxury cars,good for marketing team but seems not very practical like Like the umbrella holder in the front doors. Great idea but it is such a tight fit that pulling out the umbrella is a quite tricky. I am nitpicking here of course. Overall it has one of the best interiors in the segment. Steering wheel. is tillable so that one can get an appropriate angle. But it lack streering wheel extension. Instrument cluster is well organised.

Yes, there is seat height adjust but it is not enough as you are always reaching out to the Nexon’s steering wheel rather than the other way round.


The Connectnext Infotainment system by HarmanTM comes with a 6.5” floating Dashtop touchscreen and an exclusively tuned 8-speaker system for surround sound effect. New generation of smartphone connectivity, with AndroidTM Auto and a host of smartphone apps to ensure an easy & intuitive vocal interaction with the Infotainment for navigation, music, making calls, reading & replying to text & WhatsappTM messages, voice alerts for warning functions, video playback & image viewing options.


 The cabin of Nexon is a nice place to be in. Sculpted bucket seats are well bolstered and angled. Especially the rear where the backrest angle is just perfect for both short and long-distance journeys. Despite the sloping roof at the rear, headroom is no problem even for a 6 feet guy unlike Tiago.

The broad C-pillar provides just the right space to hide behind without making you feel claustrophobic. ,with a generous boot space of 350L and expandable storage space up to 690L with 100% rear cushion flip & flat-fold rear seats, the NEXON has been designed intelligently. Rear seats can also be split in 60:40 configuration to accommodate large items in the boot along with the passenger.

Engine and Performance


NEXON comes with a choice of both petrol and diesel engines. The powerful & torquey 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.5L turbocharged Diesel engine gives NEXON an edge over competition with best-in-class performance, and versatility offered by 3 Drive Modes (ECO, CITY & SPORT) which adapt the engine performance as per the driver’s preference. The Revotorq, 1.5L turbocharged Diesel engine delivers a class-leading power of 110PS and 260Nm of max torque and  the Revotron, 1.2L turbocharged Petrol engine delivers a superior power of 110PS and 170Nm of max torque to ensure that NEXON delivers a sporty & spirited performance. Mated to these powerful engines is an advanced 6-speed transmission ensuring better power transfer across 6 gears and quick take-off characteristics.


In the diesel power-train Tata motor has managed to control noise and vibrations reaching inside the cabin mostly well. The torque range is quite flat with it peaking at as low as 1500rpm and staying put till 2750rpm. This where you would to be driving most of the time anyways. Even when you have to press your feet beyond it , the Nexon manages this in its stride.

The petrol needs some more time to get into the grove at the lower end of the rev band. Before the torque kicks in, it is as struggles like superman against kryptonite. Tata said it is working on an “automatic” version too although this won’t be available at launch.


The NEXON comes loaded with advance safety features like ISOFIX Child restrain system for rear seats, dual front airbags and antilock braking system with corner stability control as standard across all variants, adjustable front & rear headrests for impact protection, brake assist feature for shorter stopping distance in emergency braking.

Drive and Ride

The Nexon is a very comfortable compact suv car possibly best in tata portfolio. With ride quality, ground clearance, suspension and thick 215/60 R16 tyres it also live utpo its  SUV acronym sans the traditional boxy outline. Typical potholes were easily absorbed without making any fuss. Large tyres came handy with smaller potholes while the suspension set-up takes cares of  bigger ones with excellent grades. Ride is solid but you won’t make you bouncing  around in the cabin, even when at the rear. Their is not as much body roll as a traditional  SUV like Safari with a higher centre of gravity.

The steering  feels responsive in the diesel version while very light in the petrol. The wheel itself, is a carry over from the Tiago/Tigor to check in the costs. It’s small and multi-functional. At the find I think Tata have almost found the perfect balance between handling and ride comfort.


If there is no Tata batch on it then I would have recommended it without any second thoughts. For someone who is looking to buy in 6-10 lac bracket and with choices of premium hatch or compact SUV. But since it TATA car then consider below three things before putting your money in.

  1. Depreciation on Tata car is way more than other cars. It meanswhen will for change of cars then you will get lot less money than say BREEZA.

  3. After sale service

All said Tata motors is trying very hard to correct these shortcomings. So if you better looking, comfortable and very well feature loaded. Then it is best car among its competition. Better then Breeza,or Ecosport. Modern with a futuristic design.

If you are ok TATA label  then go for it.
